How to prevent hacking, and upgrading systems?

Hey all,

It seems that we where hacked just last night, first time in three years. However, I've got a few questions from a rookie just entering the buisness.

What's the best way to prevent this from happening in the future? We always keep a hard copy of data on the server, so they couldn't do any serious damage that way. All we'd have to do is re-copy everything back up from our archives. But I'd like to prevent this from happening in the future anyway possible.

Also, we're running Windows NT Service Pack 5. We have five people currently using the server to host websites. What is the best Windows Upgrade option available? Windows 2000, Windows XP version? I 'm wondering if upgrading our software will also help prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks for any help.
