Serial = Remote?

Hi all, I have been reading up information regarding consoles and terminals, I had a lot of trouble trying to understand them, i finaly understood them and then a friend said serial is remote. Now I do not know why it is and I cannot see why it is.

If you look at it in this concept, the mian console (Monitor and keyboard which connect directly to the system) uses tty, and is not "remote"

Another console that uses serial connection in order to connect monitor and keyboard is said to be remote - ttyS, however both the main console and serial one uses a monitor which is connected to the main system through a cable same for keyboard, however again serial is classed as remote? Why si this?

Is it that I cma getting the wrong concepts of serial terminal, I searched on the Internet and saw a pic of a serial consol box that allowed many people to connect into and then a cable from that console box connetced to the main system. - Is tis what its meant by remote, as the main serial connection part (the part where the other hosts connect to the system for use through terminal) is actually external from the system?

Also can anyone give me an example of when ttyP would be used - P being parrallel right?

Regards

DislexiK
