ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe + redhat 9 problems

I am having trouble with a brand new installing of Redhat 9 (out of
desperation, I also tried RH 8 with the
same results.) I found a post similar to my problem, but no ideas how
to fix it. here is the problem changed
a bit to show what is happening to me.

1. Installation (text mode) goes fine ... no problem in detecting
hardware etc...

2. The booting up process goes fine until it reaches the following:

Configuring Kernel Parameters [OK]

(it just hangs here)

3. After 20 minutes of hanging, I pressed CTRL + C and this broke out
the hanging and I got the following >

INIT: Entering run level: 6
Checking for new hardware [OK]
Updating /etc/fstab Unable to open /etc/fstab/ for writing: Read-Only
file system [FAILED]
touch: creating '/var/lock/subsys/kudzu' : Read only file-system
Setting network parameters: [OK]
Bringing up loopback interface: [OK]
Bringing up interface eth0: [OK]
touch: creating '/var/lock/subsys/network': read only file system
Starting system logger: _

(here it stayed like this for about 5 mins)

INIT: Id "6" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "5" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "4" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "3" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "2" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "1" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

where it does nothing.

Here is my hardware.
ASUS MB P4C800-E DELUXE
Pentium 4 (1.8)
Two Western Digital Hard drives (80) gig.
512k Mushkin RAM

The motherboard has alot on board. I have disabled almost all of it
via the bios.

The only thing that I did not do is upgrade the bios. but after
looking through the readme files, it doesn't look
like it addresses any problems that might fix this.

According to linuxtested.com, RH 9 has been successfully installed on
this board.

Right now, other than updating the bios, I'm out of ideas. Ive been
working on this for a few days now and starting to get frustrated

I have tried (unsucessfully) to set up the Promise RAID on the IDE
drives, then I switched them to the IDE channels. would this have
anything to do with this?
