Setting up subnets/VLAN.
Hi,Due to an unexpected growth of our traffic, we suddenly have to move our servers into a new location and setup subnets/VLAN ourselve, and frankly we don't know where to start.
Untill now, we were assigfnes a /27 on a 100Mbps port, which we split into 2 /28's, using a F5 Big-IP as the router for the second subnet, and a Dell PC3024 as main switch.
As we need to be able to access the servers behind the Big-IP directly, we use public IP's for them too (therefore the split into subnets).
We now are assigned a single /26 through a single fiber (SX) uplink, which has to be split up over 3 racks, which house several servers.
Most logical seems to split the /26 into 1 /27 and 2 /28's, assign the /27 to rack 1 and use the same setup as we have now.
As the usage in the individual subnets will rise above the 100 Mbps, I guess an uplink from the subnet-switches to the core switch/router will require a 1000 Mpbs link?
Questions are:
* Do we need a core router to split the incoming traffic into the 3 subnets, or can this be done using a switch/stack of switches ?
* If so, what router would we need ?
* How should/would we connect the subnet-switches to the main router/switch ? Can this be done with normal CAT-5, or should we look into special uplinks/lines ?
Searching the net we did see a lot of information with (very) expensive routers, but we don't know where to start.
We've read about VLAN's, trunking etc, however, we are really new to this, so any information is welcome.
Hope anybody can point us into the right directions,
Pier
