1&1 Root Server III - System Clock @ 2x Speed - HELP!
Okay, can I start by saying "ARGHHH!!!"...? Thanks.I've hired a brand new Root Server III from 1&1, supposedly their best product:
Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz Hyper-Threaded
All is well, except the system clock is running at DOUBLE speed. That means for every 30 seconds in real time, the server counts a whole minute.
This, needless to say, is a big problem.
[rant on] 1&1 Support is completely non-existent. For some reason I cannot fathom, their 'Premium Support Line' is staffed by people who are not even remotely technical. They have absolutely no idea. The guys I spoke to today had never heard of key elements such as: PHP, MySQL, even a BIOS for God's sake.
You ask them a question, the line goes dead for 5 minutes, then they come back and ask you to repeat the question again. And this is the biggest hosting company in the world? Sorry? Am I missing something? Does 1&1 have a secret technical line where you actually have the opportunity to speak to someone technical? [/rant off]
Anyway ... I've been checking the web. There's a command along the lines of:
echo "1" >/proc/irq/0/smp_affinity
I've no idea what it does, but running it seems to cure the problem UNTIL THE NEXT REBOOT. When you reboot, the clock is racing away at double-speed again, so this is really no lasting fix at all.
I realise that 1&1 root servers are user-managed, but this is possibly a hardware/BIOS/setup fault, which has been present from day one.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, I will be eternally grateful. My fingers are crossed!
