Basic Networking question for all the WHT guru's!
This may seem like a basic question for the many WHT experts, but any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated. Our office currently has a LAN with 3 workstations connected into a D-Link 4 port router, which routes the incoming DSL connection (probably the basic home setup for many of you). The office will be relocating to a new building and has additional suites that will be leased.
Due to the nature of the business in the building, we will not have extensive Internet needs nor do any machines serve anything. Therefore, we plan on sharing a DSL line for all machines in the buidling. There is currently a need to support 10 workstations, but will not exceed 20 workstations.
Here is the question:
What do I need in order to share the DSL connection will all machines while also preventing the machines in the other suites to be able to access our machines?
From searching through various posts, I believe that a Cisco 2924 would be able to accomplish this by VLANs? Although I am not yet familiar with VLANs, I plan on learning what I need to know IF VLANs is the correct solution. Also, can I connect a ordinary D-Link 4 port router (DI-604 I believe) to a Cisco 2924? Most posts I have read deals with routing T1's and such so I am not even sure if I am on the right track. Basically, we just want to share the DSL to all machines, but not have the machines in the other suites see our machines.
I am almost afraid to ask this, but should I even consider a hardware firewall (like netscreen) for this network? We will not be serving or hosting anything, just using the Internet.
I am really not as incompetent as I may seem by the post, but I would happily welcome any help any of you experts may be able to offer. Since I have been put in charge of this whole networking project, I feel as if I am coming from children's networking to real networking.
