High server load, please help :(

Hi, my server's load went up to 70+. Some info:

- The website is php/mysql based, with only 40 people online at peak
- website offers download thru mysql
- Server's It's usually around 2 load.
- amd 2200 with 512 ram
- always receive this error when load is that high:

apache on servernode.net failed
[maxclientscheck] has exceeded the MaxC
[maxfilescheck] Apache on has exceeded

Can you offer any advice? thank you.
