mysql remote - opinions needed

hello,

i'd like to hear some opinion on this setup:

One database server just for the db and two Webservers for a very big site, which has about 1.5 Mio visitors each month, hits are even much more ofcourse!
The catch at the setup we're thinking about is that the database Server should be located somewhere else than the Webservers, as the two Webservers would be also put into different locations, for reduncy reasons.

What do you think:
Does that add too much latency so viewing the website would be pretty much impossible or would that be possible without too much slowdown?

Also i have no idea of how much traffic this would generate... i guess the db traffic should'nt be that much?! 500GB should be enough for this kind of site and traffic?! (the site is all PHP/mysql )

And what would you choose for a kind of machine for this db Server? Shouldn't a whitebox from some low-cost provider, for example, with 512MB RAM, IDE Drives (SCSI would probably be better, but it's not avaible for many of these cheaper offers) and 1TB Traffic should be more than enough?

- Thanks for your help! mysql remote - opinions needed
