Windows Server Firewall Software That Works (Ha!)
I would love to hear from those that have seen actual success running any software based firewall on a Windows server either 2000 or 2003.In my testing we have tried two so far and both were VERY VERY bad for us. One took out a dedicated machine totally and the other has just been an ongoing mess. As a rule they seem to make the machines unstable as heck causing the firewall software to die constantly and making the machine do the same.
So far we have tested the following:
Tiny Firewall (took out a machine for us)
Visnetic from Deerfield (stability issues big time on Win 2k and 2003)
Black ICE this has worked OK for us for a long time, of course the recent hack to it was not any fun. We were not affected by the hack but still makes ya nervous.
We have a LOT of machines out on the street and a good number are Windows for various uses and customers. We keep some servers in house and some out. Problem is, it's very tough to find dedicated server providers that will offer Hardware firewalls. So, what's left is software firewalls that so far just downright stink in general.
Any ideas?
