Veritas BackupExec 8.5 Hardware Compression Issues

I recently purchased a new 15/30GB DDS3 drive for one of my colo customers, they already had a licenced install of Veritas Backup Exec 8.5.

Everything installed fine (the drive is SCSI) and I setup backup jobs (scheduled), manual jobs, backup sets etc.... everything works great....

However, although hardware compression is enabled, the tapes are 15/30GB (HP tapes, but I have tried others), and it also says in the Backup Log that it started the backup with Hardware Compression (I selected Hardware compression, otherwise cancel job), but it still only gets under 15GB on the tape.... I am aware that the compression level depends on the type of files backed up (and what compression the files are at), but still, I should be able to get at least 24GB on each tape... I know that as they used to have an OnStream ADR 30GB Drive (unfortunately the tapes were too expensive, so they opted for DDS), the OnStream drive was used with OnStream Echo (another reason why they changed to DDS)....

I tried replicating this on a spare server with a 15/30GB DLT drive, with the same version of BackupExec (8.5) and low and behold, it does not achieve hardware compression, the DLT drive shows the Compression light on, logs say its hardware compression etc.... I have looked on the net for fixes, but I am having no luck... has anyone on these boards had these problems ?

I don't get any problems with my central backup system (Veritas NETBackup Professional), its just this version of BackupExec....

Btw, it is Veritas BackupExec Server Edition (8.5)....

Thanx !!!
