Redhat 9 memory optimization
I made a huge backup of core system files by tarring them up and my memory usage went up to 99%. This was to be expected but after the backup operation was completed the memory usage remained at 99%. tar wasn't running and no program was using this memory. But top insists that it is being used.
I primarily work with windows so perhaps this is just a linux "feature." How can I free this RAM without having to restart? This is a brand new server and I only server about 500 users per day on a couple of sites it hosts. I have to restart the server every 20 days or so because the RAM ends up getting to 70% used.... after restart it is at 14% and begins its climb upward again.
Any idea what is going on???
