index.htm does not automatically load

I have a site, that used to work fine. Without knowing what hapened, the index page (index.htm) suddenly stopped working and whoever hits the site, gets a "page not found message".

If you type the whole address, it works properly meaning that for some reason the page stopped loading automatically as it used to.

Can anyone help?
