FTP Woes

Hi,

I've tried asking this at a few other places, but nobody seems to know the answer, so I thought I'd try it on the gurus here.

Having commissioned a new server we went about our business of loading a few sites up. Nothing important yet, just sites of our own.

On Monday, all was well at 23:00 GMT when I went to bed, but at 07:00 on Tuesday morning all FTP transfers fail with a '550 Requested action not permitted' error.

Okay, first thought is permissions and/or ownership problems as that's the de facto cause of this sort of error. Unfortunately the permissions on the /home directories look okay to me and they match the permissions on another box where I have FTP working okay.

proftpd.conf is the next place I looked and I made that match the format used on other boxes.

Then I reinstalled FTP again, then tried a few different versions of ProFTPd to see if that would help. Then I thought I'd try Pure-FTP instead, but that still failed with the same error.

Okay, on to cPanel. I tried the latest Edge, Current, Release and Stable builds, but still no luck.

I got someone else to try it to rule out anything local to my client machine and I tried a couple of different client FTP packages. None of this helped, so the problem must be with the server.

I can connect okay and I can do a lot of things when I'm connected: create remote directories, delete remote files etc. However, I can't perform the simple task of transferring a file from my local machine to the server.

A good cry didn't help much, so I'm hoping someone may have some ideas on this forum. What's particularly puzzling is why it suddenly stopped working overnight on Mon/Tue. I looked at what ran during that time and I can only see the backups, which run every night on all boxes.

I would be grateful for any suggestions that anyone many have.
