help with setting up 'externa' subdomain

Short story is I got a VPS and i'd like to host a subdomain on it. i'm not exactly sure how this would work. the VPS runs freebsd which i have never seen.

on my dns server i've entered the subdomain IN A <ip> but it is not resolving. what should be configured on the vps for it to accept the subdomain? thanks
