What are the cases for a firewall in a hosted environment

I have been running both Linux and Windows systems for years without a firewall in front of them. All I use the boxes for are Web, Email, Database and FTP hosting.
I make sure that I lock down ALL unneeded ports so the only ports available are ones that I would make available through a firewall anyway.
On Linux I make sure no extra processes are running. On windows I use Routing and Remote Access to "filter" all unneeded ports.
I have been talking with some "Windows" guys who have made me question this a bit. Even though it has been very secure for me in the past I wonder what others are doing.
I am sure there are people who feel strongly both ways and I am interested to hear both sides.
Please let me know how you configure things and how you feel about this type of security.

Thanks for your input
