IMAP very slow, firewall

When trying to check email via IMAP, the process is very slow. However, I've pinpointed it to firewalls. If both the server and client have no firewall on, IMAP is fine.

Turn firewall on either one or both, and it takes forever to check.

I've search the forums and saw a thread regarding something similar, and the suggestion was to disable reverse lookup. Googling a bit, I'm not sure if I should do that.

Am I losing some security in doing so? Is there any way to address the problem I'm having?

I'm using DA+KISS on the server.
