Secondary DNS - taking load?

I recently signed up for a managed secondary DNS service (UltraDNS) and switched all my domains' NS2 and NS3 records over to their servers. The NS1 record still remained my own dedicated machine running bind.

Today, however, only 8 days into October, UltraDNS is reporting 105,000 queries have been used, and are going to start charging me $0.55/1000 overage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't secondary DNS only supposed to kick in if my primary machine is down? To the the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been. Where did these one hundred and five thousand queries come from?
