How many websites per server?

Using Apache and any variant of unix (pick your flavor of choice), what in real-world-experiences have any of you seen as the limit of the functional number of web hosts per single server?

Just curious what others have run across. I've personally seen it vary based on the flavor of unix (let's not get into Windows/etc... for now) and the configuration of the apache server (ie. mods included, etc...). Domain names (and the relative size of the httpd.conf file) have also played into this equation.

Any examples or instances come to mind? I've personally seen a working single server (decent hardware config - nothing extremely high-end) hosting over 2,000 web sites with domains and still kicking along.

Thoughts/experiences?
