Copying Directories w/ Permission

How do I copy over directories from one drive to another without losing the owner/group permissions?

I realised that if I try to copy using cp -R /sourcedirectory /targetdirectory with root, /targetdirectory files will be owned by root and not by the owner under /sourcedirectory.
