Windows VPN SMB and Outlook!

Really stupid problem that might interest someone.

At work we use XP / ME & Outlook 2000 and regularly 'saveas' messages with attachements.

If you open a local directory with a lot of files you will see the entire directory open and then the icon by the files quickly change the the outlook envelope.

If you do the same on a network drive the icons take a second or two to change - 30 files is like 45 seconds perhaps.

Now try a VPNconnection to a server running Samba, browsing directories and opening files is fine, when I did a saveas in a network directory on the server Outlook on the local machine seemed frozen for perhaps 10 minutes, but the VPN connection was transfering loads - 10MB or so - just to display the directory with stupid windows icons - no thumbnails etc. 10MB is about the total of all the Outlook MSG files.

Any ideas - daft overhead on a directory listing!
