Preventing DDOS attacks?

Hi,

What does it take to prevent DDOS attacks? I am on my way to a 3rd ISP now because they seem to have very little protection out there for DDOS attacks.

APF and DDOS protection from the ISP do nothing for me.

Is it normal for a web host to get DDOSed a lot or this uncommon? The type of clients I host are "anonymous" so maybe that could increase the chance of being DDOSed. Preventing DDOS attacks?

What does everyone else do to stop this from happening? I am going to get a Virtuozzo VDS server and have a dedicated IP per site so if they target an IP it will only affect that particular site. Is this the best solution?

Thanks,

Matt
