Problem with mod_layout

Hello,

today I've installed mod_layout 4.0.1a for Apache2 (self compiled) and PHP 4.3.8 (also self compiled).
All seems to be perfect, but I get the following output (it's a phpBB2 Board):

P X¬àÓ@Ô er: htt0 X¬àÓ@Ô 40 X¬àÓ@Ô 0 X¬àÓ@Ô 0 X¬àÓ@Ô
...and so on...

Configuration:

AddOutputFilter LAYOUT html htm php
LayoutHeader "<P> abc <P>"

When I install Apache2 and mod_layout and PHP4 with apt-get its no problem, but my self compiled version failed Problem with mod_layout

Does anyone knows an alternative to mod_layout?
