Trying to figure out why my server died

Ok, i don't think I'm on open mail relay. Here are some hints fro the logs:

Sep 24 06:20:51 server kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 28545 (httpd).
Sep 24 06:20:58 server kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 28546 (httpd).

sendmail[1007]: rejecting connections on daemon MTA: load average: 18


My server was up with no problems for 70 days. Any idea how i find out why it died? I am running some continuous perl scripts in the background.
