Nocona Xeon versus AMD Opteron
I recently purchased a new dual Xeon (533mhz FSB) server so that I could cluster out my mySQL / web server into a mySQL server and a web server. The dual Xeon has performed awesomely as a web server, but the mySQL server is quivering beneath the demand.Currently, the mySQL server (p4::2.8ghz 533mhz fsb/1gb ddram) is processing a little over 15,000 mySQL queries per minute, and her loads are averaging around 6.00. So, I am looking into doing the following:
Buy a new server that is at least 33% more powerful than my current dual Xeon (2x 2.8ghz Xeon, 533mhz FSB, 2x 1024 pc2100 ddram, 10k rpm SATA drives). I will move the webserver from the dual Xeon to this new server, and I will move mySQL to the dual Xeon. However, that may not be what we end up doing, so I want to know: which is better for mySQL processing? Nocona Xeon or Opteron?
What are the demands of the mySQL server: Process no less than 20,000 mySQL queries per minute 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What technology must the server work with: mySQL Cluster software to cluster the processing of queries over multiple servers.
So, can you all provide me with reasons why to choose a specific server type over another? And please, support your opinions with reasons.
Thanks!
