Hard Disk or Motherboard I/O problem....

One of our servers has been randomly kernel been giving kernel panics for a while now usually - usually after logging a segfault in the tar process when running our backup script. The server is running Debian and we have been experiencing this problem on both 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels.

Tonight I noticed that the load spiked up and the following was written to /var/log/messages :

hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
hdc: error waiting for DMA
hdc: dma timeout retry: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hdd: DMA disabled
hdc: drive not ready for command
ide1: reset: success
hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hdc: error waiting for DMA
hdc: dma timeout retry: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hdc: drive not ready for command
ide1: reset: success
hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hdc: error waiting for DMA
hdc: dma timeout retry: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hdc: drive not ready for command
ide1: reset: success
hdc: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hdc: error waiting for DMA
hdc: dma timeout retry: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hdc: drive not ready for command
ide1: reset: success

The server runs 2 IDE hard disks in a raid 1 mirror. Is this likely to be a hard disk or motherboard ide problem?

Thanks in advance Hard Disk or Motherboard I/O problem....
