Changing password for user root
root@hostname [/]# passwd
Changing password for user root.
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

I am logged into SSH, i am trying to change my password, but i am getting the above error.
I also tried to open a new session, using my current password and it is not letting me in!
What causes the "Authentication token manipulation error" and what is the solution for it.
