Huge Server Problem
Hi,We had a server go down today suddenly, it is at the Planet's Data Center (Server Matrix). We submitted a reboot request, they performed a reboot then classified the issue as an "outage" because the server would not respond after a reboot. They put a tech on the server and he responded with this:
"I have looked into this system and the startup scripts are no good onthe system. The system will not boot fromany kernel and the rc.d folder has had some edit's to the system. There is nothing more that can be done but your going to have to submit a OS reload on the system and request a new drive with a fresh OS and then also request the main bad drive be mounted as a 2nd drive back up and you can move the data off the bad drive to the new drive and then after 24's we are going to need to remove the bad drive from the system. Please submit a OS reload in orbit and request that to be done.... "
My question is how would something like this happen? Was the system compromised by a hacker? Did the files become corrupt from a hard disk error? What do you all think would cause some thing like this on a Red Hat Box?
Also, they are going to mount a new drive with a new OS on the system, and mount the bad drive as well so we can pull data (user account files) off of the old drive. Are we going to have to reconfigure all of the server settings from WHM/CPanel or can this be copied over from the bad drive?
Any input would be great!
Eric
