Debian Packages will not re-install

I run a private dedicated server for myself. I use debian-testing.

Last week I was messing around with some ideas for a website and installed mailman. Everything went perfectly and it worked wonderfully. Then I figured I wasn't going to do the project so I did an apt-get remove --purge mailman. This clearly wasn't the move becase now I want to install it and I can't - dpkg always gets an error. I'd like to keep with debian packages - I know I could always install mailman from source. How can I clear out anything and everything related to mailman so I can do a clean installation? I want the system to completely forget that it was ever installed.
