What's going on at Spamhaus?
I've been subscribing to an online E-zine for two years, when suddenly, it gets blocked by Spamhaus. I'm not too concerned about Spamhaus listing an E-zine for not being double-opt-in, but I am concerned about what they did afterward. Take a look at this:
Spamhaus blocked incoming mail to SBL users from AdLand Digest because AdLand Digest began spamming a spamhaus.org address. Adland said "maybe someone subscribed you for fun". We asked them to let us know how they intended to fix their list system so that it would not subscribe address owners without permission again and they replied that they weren't going to do anything about it.
The record however timed-out and was removed on 2004-11-03.
But, Adland decided that Spamhaus needed to get a little payback, so Adland sent out a message to all their subscribers telling their subscribers to each write to Spamhaus director Steve Linford. Consequently Spamhaus began receiving large amounts of messages, many harassing and with legal threats, from Adland subscribers.
Therefore Spamhaus has re-assessed this listing and has now decided that as Adland has no intention of converting to confirmed-opt-in to prevent abuse of its list (indeed Adland cites the reason being that its current subscribers are too stupid to know how to confirm an optin request), plus Adland is cajoling its users into bombing Spamhaus with emails, this listing is now reinstated.
To have this listing removed, Adland will now send a message to all of its subscribers telling them to cease bombing Spamhaus, and will provide Spamhaus with an explaination of what Adland intends to do to stop addresses such as spamhaus.org's being "opted-in" to Adland mailings without our consent.

On his site, Steve says that it is not very likely that he could
have made mistake by putting anyone into his database.
He is always right. Doesn't this sound familiar?
What I would like you to do (if you care that digest is published
in the future) contact Steve Linford linford@spamhaus.org and tell
him how you got on this list and why you need Adland Digest.
That his quest to curb spam is a good thing, but he needs to
be able to distinguish between a spammer and the company
which didn't implement maximum measures to defend themselves
from malicious users.
Be professional with your letter as Steve Linford feels equal with God
if it comes to spam.
In his eyes, he is the ultimate authority and any threats or angry
responses, will only cause that our newsletter won't be taken off
their black list.

I'm wondering if my personal experience with AdLand is part of a bigger trend going on at Spamhaus. A year or two ago, Spamhaus looked pretty reasonable. They only listed the most obnoxious offenders, and even then, they were quick to take legit sites off. I even added them to my mix of blocklists for a while.
However, I'm wondering if it's time for me to move them a little closer to SPEWS when it comes to accidentally blocking legit email. What do you guys think?
Thanks.
