Connectivity suddenly dropping out on win2k SP3

For the past couple months, my machine has started to suddenly loose all connectivity to the internet.

I'll be working on something online, suddenly my machine ceases to communicate. I can ping, trace route, and even renew my IP but I cannot connect with anything. FTP, HTTP, ICQ, messenger, etc. Nothing works unless I reboot the machine.

I've reinstalled, uninstalled, updated, downgraded drivers and even service packs to no avail. I've even swapped NIC cards and the problem still arises. The only thing I can think of is reinstalling windows. Hell, I've even gone as far enough as disabling my firewall, antivirus, and such and connecting my machine directly to the modem and it still happens. I've also removed all protocols and services and reinstalled them. Manually assigining IPs and nameservers hasnt worked either. There is *nothing* and I mean nothing in the event logs. No error messages, warnings, etc.

I've scanned for viruses, spyware, trojans, etc and I'm clean.

I really do not want to restort to reinstalling windows just to fix this problem.

If you suggest ditching windows, whats a good *nix based GUI that I can run windows apps in. Theres several apps I've spent too much cash on to abandon.

Any thoughts, or is this thing due to be reformatted again?
