Click to Download A Graphic?

I seem to remember that there was a way to do this but I can't recall how and Google isn't helping me.

What I would like to do is have the user click on a link to a .jpg or .gif graphic, and instead of the graphic displaying in their browser I want the save dialog to come up so they can save the graphic to their hard disk.

I know you can right-click on graphic and choose Save Picture As..., but what I have is a page of thumbnails that link to large graphics and I don't want them to have to load the graphic in a browser window, it would be much cleaner if they could just get the save dialog directly and save the graphic to their hard disk.

Does anyone know how to do this? I think there was something about putting graphics in a folder with a special .htaccess file but I just can't remember out how to do this.
