What is the advantage of having more Backbone carriers?

First, let me say that I am new to this and would apprecaite some help from those with experience. I am looking to learn more about networks in respect to hosting servers.

To begin, how do backbone carriers work?

Second, what is the advantage of having more Backbone carriers? (ie. The Planet boasts that it has 10)

Are you really connected to all the network providers? Does it provide faster access for clients around the country and globe?

Last, all of the local datacenters appear to only have connections to a single backbone. Is this a downfall? Would it be better to be at a place like The Planet?
