Hard Drive Data Recovery

I need some help on recovering some data from an external Maxtor OneTouch FireWire and USB hard drive. It is originally setup on an Apple IBook and formatted for a mac with files on it. We decided to setup a fileserver in the office on a PC and wanted to transfer the files on the hard drive to the PC.

We plugged in the hard drive to the PC and windows popped up asking to format it because it couldnt read the drive. We said no and unplugged it from the computer and were going to just transfer the files over the network but when we plugged it into the mac it said it couldnt read it either.

According to Maxtor, when it got plugged into the windows machine it put something on it when it tried to read it that corrupted the first layer on the drive.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good macintosh program for recovering files off a hard drive or a good data recovery place that doesnt cost too much around Sacramento, CA. We have tried Norton Systemworks for mac but it didnt even read the drive and we have tried the mac's built in disk recovery but even thought it sees the drive is there, but it wont repair or recover anything off it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
