two mailboxes?

Hello here's a question that seems simple but I can't figure it out.

I use WHM/Cpanel, for a domain abc.com I have one (not the catchall) email account setup.

the folder structure on the server is

-mail
--abc.com
------james
--james

(one james folder inside of the abc.com folder and one james folder in the root of the mail folder)

and there are files called inbox in both james directories. The one in the /mail/abc.com/james/ folder on the server is fine, seems to be written to every time email comes in, and is constantly "cleared" when the user checks their email.

but the other inbox file at /mail/james/ is 30 MB in size and the last time it was modified was a couple months ago and when I view the file it is filled with old mail. Is it ok to delete this inbox file? Did WHM/CPanel switch to a new mailbox format and just leave the old one intact? What would cause there to be multiple inbox files for one single email account?

When I go through webmail to view the inbox it comes up with the /mail/abc.com/james/ inbox file and the other one I can't seem to view, I had to download it and view it in a text browser.
