Networking Windows + RH9 (possibly with samba?)
Hi, ive been a real windows kid up until a few weeks ago when i decided that i wanted to build a linux pc. Ive completed that (after some problems were solved) and installed red hat 9.My ADSL modem is not compatible with Linux, so, i have decided to network the two computers.
I have bought the 2 pci network cards, and got a cross over network cable which i was told would work.
I searched google and found samba would be the best solution to get linux using the correct protocol as windows.
The problem is im a complete noob to networking and to linux. On samba.org i dont even know which rehat 9 installsion binary to choose. (http://us4.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/RedHat/)
I choose one of them and put it on a cd, took the cd to the linux machine. Copied the file to the HDD. Tried to install the RPM but it gave an error.
All i really want to do is enable the internet via a network and possibly file sharing so i dont have to waste tons of cd-r's.
Could anyone give me any clues as to what to do? Thanks.
