Discard or return to sender?

I'm astonished how much crap gets sent to my server. Every 10 seconds somebody is trying to send something to a non-existant address.

I have the serer blackhole all non-matching email addresses, as I didn't want it to waste its time sending notifications to made up / spoofed addresses.

But I was thinking, wouldn't that then have the culprit server think, hey, it accepted mail for that address, and send more to it, or are the scripts not that clever?

What does everybody else do?
