WHOIS Check?

I am wanting to put a domain checker on my hosting site and am wondering how its done? I'd imagine it'd be done with PHP and through WHOIS?

Any coders / programmers out there, can anyone help me? Is it pretty simple to do or do you have to be expert in PHP?

If anyone could tell me how or point me to some tutorials, that'd be a great help!
