Logfiles viewable on the web?

I've heard in a few places that sometimes logfiles are generated by automatic tools and are left open to the general viewing public. Beyond that sometimes getting indexed by search engines.

Is there any truth to this and how would I know? How can I check my site to make sure that this isn't happening to me?
