FOLDERS: love them and hate them. But how many would you recommend?
Hello,We have a system where by every account regisered, creates a folder on the hdisk, and the user can then upload a few files on their account. Not much in terms of space taken.
This worked like a charm at the start, but when the folder count started hitting 25000+ we started experiencing issues. Mainly with backup, and to be honest, browsing that root folder takes a VERY long time.
The reason we opted for this setup was purely for organisational purposes. Where by all users have their files nice and clean in their own folders.
I know a few possible suggestions such as:
1) Chop the root in folders of 10,000 user subfolders each
2) Chop the root by date/month/year according to when users register
3) Get rid of folders all together and organise the files for each user with a unique rename instead and throw them all into one big organised mess
I wanted to ask for suggestions and feedback on how we can improve this, or if there is anything else that can be done to make sure this is efficient or effective? What happens when the user base bypass 1million? Long term long term
