reboot after apt-get update?

some gd image functions were not working on my server so i ran an apt-get update. do i need to reboot my server after the apt-get process for everything to start working?

i was running 4.2.2 php, my hope was that the apt-get update would upgrade it to a newer php version, but it's still showing the same version and the image function bug is still happenning. does apt-get upgrade to a newer version? or is it just adding bug patches to the old version? so i am woundering if i need to reboot for the new version to show up, or do i need an alternative way of upgrading php/gd to a newer version? if i need to do the latter, what's the best way? (i'm running redhat 9 / webmin.
