backbone routing problem

I recently purchased a server from rackforce.com, and I am really pleased with them so far, but I'm having a bit of a problem as of 2 nights ago.

If I traceroute to their website (rackforce.com, which is located in the same racks my server is located at) I route in a fairly direct manner (about 10 hops), and my ping times are quite low.

2 days ago my IP (On a different class C than rackforce.com, but located in the same DC) tracerouted to the same place. However now, when I traceroute there it takes about 20 hops and goes all the way across Canada, down into the US, then back up into Canada. This creates almost double the ping time.

I called the people that run the main routers in Canada(bell), and he told me there was nothing anyone could do to change this behavior, and that the IP is trying to take the fastest way there, but it's getting routed around. He even told me a traceroute from Florida was going to Germany, and back to US before heading to Canada.

What is causing this, and is there anyway I can fix it? I want to try and fix this as it is causing some speed issues from my city, and that's where I plan to get all of my business.

Thanks guys,

Kirk Johnson
