ImageMagick from RPM vs. Source - help!
I was wondering if some of you would be so kind as to lend your opinions and thoughts on a recent upgrade I did on a cPanel server, though this could apply to any server running 'nix and imagemagick.I had installed imagemagick from WHM's install an RPM however the install version was something like 5.5 so I manually removed the rpms and dependencies then manually installed the latest rpm from the imagemagick site.
From my understanding the RPMs are only updated if/when the OS vendor, in this case, CentOS, sees fit to update the package to something higher than what comes with their software bundle.
Is that correct? If so what happens if they decide to "upgrade" to a lesser version than what is installed now when the system is yummed up? Will it detect a higher version installed and skip it or overwrite my custom version for the one the vendor recommends?
Thanks for the help.
