Legal Question - Hosting a file that the copyright owner wants removed

Hi,

One of the websites on my server is hosting a file download of a copyrighted program. The copyright owner of the program has emailed us demanding that it be removed. If these were the only circumstances, it would be simple. However, upon review, the program was released several years ago for free. The documentation included with the program specifically states that it may be freely distributed:

This program is free!

You are allowed to distribute this program freely as long as it is
not for profit.

The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
which may result from the use of this program.

All trademarks and trade names are properties of their respective
owners.

Copyright © 2001. All Rights Reserved.
I would like to resolve this in whatever manner is legally correct. I don't want to remove it from the website if I don't have to, but I am not sure if I could be facing legal action if I don't.

As I am unclear exactly on what copyright law dictates here, please advise.

Thanks,
Jason Rodzik
