External IP and LAN problem
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hello fellas,
I am new here, but my friend said that you guys are really knowledged here so maybe we could find out a solution to my problem.
I have at home a network, there is firstly an ADSL bridge and then a cable goes from there to a router (also has a wifi router in it). From the router the cables go to all PCs including mine and a server machine. The server is running Win 2003 Server and my PC is Windows XP Pro. I have already noticed the issue before, but today it came especially up as I have to set the server up to run some websites and I wanted to test the URLs from my computer to see if they work. I have also done everything correctly with the domain name which I directed with an A record from DNS server to my home network IP. So, I went to the URL which I had directed and all I got was some time of loading and then 404 error. Also the same is with FTP, just cannot resolve the IP. Surprisingly everybody from all over the world (some friends from MSN and so on) were all able to access the website via the domain and my public IP as well. Then I figured out that there must be something which blocks the local computers to access the network via the public IP allocated to my home. By the way I can access the server, websites and FTP very nicely if I go with internal IP or computer name. The server is also visible in the My Network Places when I look from my PC and I can ping the public IP also without problems. It is just that the services cannot be called up via public IP from my LAN. The main reason why I need to do this is that as the websites are set up as virtual hosts in the server, there is no way I could test them without looking them via their original domains.
The router is set up so that the port 80 and IIS service are forwarded to the server internal ip.
I'm looking forward to your replies. Thank you really very very much!
