A few small attacks

I am setting up my first server which will be all alone out on the web. Since I started portforwarding SSH to this server I have had a few bulk "attacks" - some script trying to logon with about 50 common account names / passwords.

They are not anything serious, but it seems I should report them to the hosts or something. Whats the first step? When does it become something I should take serious - outside the obvious - when someone actually does break in.
