What can I do to decrease server load?

My site is starting to have a very high server load during peak hours. What services can I stop in order to decrease the server load. Here is what I have running so far and its status:

Disk sda6 (/usr) 23 %
Disk sda5 (/var) 5 %

Btw, here are my server specs:

2.8GHz HT
2 Gigs of DDR400 SDRAM - with ECC support.
2x160GB SATA HD
1500 GB Bandwidth
