High load server - help needed

Hi,

Last few days morning my server load is going up.

I have high traffic PHP and MySQL site on the server. Server is AMD Athlon 2400 with 512 MB RAM. Normal load is below 1, but at morning time, it goes above 5. Some times it goes up and hang if i don't give a reboot or httpd and mysql service restarts.

I know it is time for getting a FAST server. But it take few days. How do i prevent the server from running away ? Modifying httpd.conf will help ?

Can anyone help me in optimizing httpd.conf

I need a temporary solution to keep my server up for few more days, then i will be getting new server.
