Server Crashed, Kernel Problem possibly?
My server crashed abruptly, and I haven't the slightest clue to WHY. I am the only person using my server, no reselling or clients.
I haven't changed any settings in almost two months now, every time I login to cpanel it always states it's uptodate, which I find odd cpanel has no bugs found or no updates in the past two months.
Is this correct, or did I make a mistake when setting up my firewall and it blocks cpanel from checking the updates? How can I find this out for sure, I honestly forgot what firewalls and stuff I installed, I know I have APF installed and ALL of the RFXnetworks security things installed. (that includes the LES which chmods like EVERYTHING that I don't need to use).
After several hours of downtime and fdsk, the server host told me "server is online, when I booted the latest default kernel, it will show tons of erros, I rebooted again and booted the lower release kernel, your server is online again. You need to change the kernel boot, if not it will have the same problem again.".
I asked how and all I got was "http://www.cpqlinux.com/grub.html
you need to edit grub.conf if you use grub as your boot loader
lilo.conf for lilo".
now I am lost and I could use all the help anyone can give me, the tech said the next time the box crashes it will happen again until I fix it permentanely.
My versions that appear in Cpanel/WHM admin login.
WHM 9.9.9 cPanel 9.9.9-R14
Fedora i686 - WHM X v3.1.0
And on the news page:
"Security There are no known security problems with the build of cPanel you are using! "
I run :
lilo -v -v
and
grub -v -v
and I get
root@cdf1 [/usr/local/lib]# lilo -v -v
bash: lilo: command not found
root@cdf1 [/usr/local/lib]# grub -v -v
bash: grub: command not found
root@cdf1 [/usr/local/lib]#
so I don't even know how to check what version boot loader I have.
I know that I did install multiple php changes and many different things in the config when recompiling and what ever I do to the server (update or whatever) I have to make sure that those updates and mb_ stay installed and on.
I'd really appreciate some help, I have become rusty at this ssh stuff since I have not used it in two months.
