Load spikes

Normally, load would slowly rise ( increased web requests etc ) Howver, this load is spiking like ching chong.
Any ideas why?
Apache is fairly busy, but not chronically causing any problems ( I think ).
mysql is hardly busy, and everything else ( apps ) don't seem to be causing any problems ( as far as i know ).
Any ideas why load would be spiking like this?
