HELP! how to restart mysql?

Hi guys for some odd reason mysql stopped working on my site.

I am getting this error:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'

Any ideas how to fix? I have tryed rebooting. Also I was hoping to do a help command in ssh by typeing "mysql help" but it wont let me as it cannot connect to mysql.

Any ideas how to fix? Really need to get this sort as soon as!
